Margaret Elaine Hamilton, born on August 17, 1936, is an American computer scientist who made important contributions to space exploration. She led the team that created the software for NASA's Apollo Guidance Computer, which helped guide the Apollo missions to the Moon. Her work ensured that the spacecraft could make important decisions during flights, keeping the astronauts safe.
Hamilton started her career at the MIT Instrumentation Laboratory and later founded two software companies, Higher Order Software in 1976 and Hamilton Technologies in 1986, both located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
She has written many papers and reports about software and its role in engineering. Hamilton is also known for creating the term "software engineering" to describe how software is designed and built as part of larger systems.
In 2016, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama for her important work on the Apollo missions. Her ideas and technologies continue to influence how we think about and build software today.
Early life and education
Margaret Elaine Heafield was born on August 17, 1936, in Paoli, Indiana. Her parents were Kenneth Heafield and Ruth Esther Heafield (née Partington). The family later moved to Michigan, where she finished school at Hancock High School in 1954.
She studied mathematics at the University of Michigan and then went to Earlham College, where her mother had also studied. She graduated in 1958 with a degree in mathematics and a smaller focus on philosophy. She thanks Florence Long, who led the math department at Earlham, for encouraging her love of mathematics. She also said her father, who was a poet, and her grandfather, who was a school headmaster, inspired her to study philosophy as well.
Career
Margaret Hamilton started her career in Boston, planning to study abstract mathematics at Brandeis University. Instead, she joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1959 to work on weather-predicting software. She programmed on early computers, helping advance weather studies.
Soon after, Hamilton joined MIT’s SAGE Project from 1961 to 1963. Here she helped create software for a military computer system that could detect aircraft. Her successful work on this project led to her joining NASA’s Apollo team.
Hamilton joined MIT’s Instrumentation Laboratory in 1965 to help build the Apollo Guidance Computer for moon missions. She became the first woman programmer on the project and later led the team that created all the spacecraft’s software. Her work included designing systems to detect and fix problems, which proved very important during the Apollo 11 moon landing. When the spacecraft’s computer showed warning signals, the software Hamilton designed helped the astronauts continue safely.
Later, Hamilton started her own companies. In 1976, she co-founded Higher Order Software to develop better ways to prevent errors in programs. In 1986, she founded Hamilton Technologies, also focused on improving software design.
Legacy
Margaret Hamilton is known for naming the field of "software engineering". She explained that when she first used this term, it was new and unusual. Over time, people began to see software development as a proper engineering field, just like building with hardware. Today, "software engineering" is respected just like any other technical subject.
Hamilton also created a special language called USL to help prevent mistakes in software. This idea came from her work on the Apollo missions. Her work helped make computer programming better and opened doors for more women to join science and technology fields. In fact, she is celebrated alongside another computer pioneer, Grace Hopper.
Tributes
In 2017, a special LEGO set called "Women of NASA" included a figurine of Hamilton along with famous astronauts Mae Jemison and Sally Ride. This set honored the important roles these women played in NASA's history. In 2019, Google made a beautiful image of Hamilton and the Apollo 11 mission using mirrors at the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility. A character in the TV series For All Mankind was also inspired by Hamilton’s amazing work.
Awards
Margaret Hamilton has been honored with many awards for her important work. In 1986, she received the Augusta Ada Lovelace Award from the Association for Women in Computing. In 2016, she was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama, the highest civilian honor in the United States. In 2022, she was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio.

Margaret Hamilton has a sister named Kathryn Heafield.
She met her first husband, James Cox Hamilton, in the mid-1950s while they were in college. They got married on June 15, 1958, after she finished her studies at Earlham. She taught math and French for a short time at a school in Boston, Indiana. The couple moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where their daughter Lauren was born on November 10, 1959. They divorced in 1967, and Margaret later married Dan Lickly.
