The Mayor of Islamabad (Urdu: ناظم اسلام آباد) is the leader in charge of the city of Islamabad and the municipal services for the capital territory. This important role helps manage the city and its resources, ensuring that the needs of its residents are met.
As the head of the municipal administration, the mayor oversees many key areas such as public services, city planning, and community development. The mayor works with local government teams to create policies that support a safe and thriving environment for everyone living in or visiting Islamabad.
This position plays a vital role in the daily life of the capital territory, helping to maintain order, improve infrastructure, and support the growth of the city. The mayor’s work impacts schools, parks, transportation, and many other parts of the city that people use every day.
Local government system
The mayor of Islamabad was created by a law passed in 2015 by the National Assembly and Senate. Islamabad has 50 Union Councils.
Besides the mayor, three Deputy mayors are also elected.
The mayor leads the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI). The MCI has many elected officials and about 11,000 workers. It takes care of things like planning the city, fixing roads, keeping the environment clean, and providing water and cleaning services. The mayor also leads the Capital Development Authority (CDA), which has around 4,500 workers and helps manage land and big projects in the area.

Sheikh Anser Aziz was the first mayor of Islamabad. He took his oath on 4 March 2016. The mayor's office is located in G-6, Islamabad.
