Microcosmic orbit
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The microcosmic orbit (小周天), also known as the Self Winding Wheel of the Law, is a Taoist qigong energy cultivation technique. It uses deep breathing exercises together with meditation and concentration to help develop the flow of qi, or energy, along special pathways in the body. These pathways might sound familiar if you are learning about traditional Chinese medicine, qigong, tai chi, Neidan, or Chinese alchemy.
People often start by sitting while doing the microcosmic orbit, but they can also stand in a posture called Zhan zhuang or move gently like in tai chi. Understanding this technique is very important because it has a long history in Chinese alchemy and is a key part of many Taoist exercises that millions of people practice around the world today.
History
The history of the microcosmic orbit goes back a very long time in China, to times before history was written down. Its ideas can be found in an old book called the I Ching, which a legend says was written by the Emperor Fu Xi thousands of years ago.
An old stone carving from 1886 in the White Cloud Temple in Beijing shows pictures that explain some of the ways people used to practice this meditation. These ways come from a wise man named Lü Dongbin, who was born in the year 798 AD. Lü Dongbin was one of the Eight Immortals.
Practice
The microcosmic orbit exercise starts with steps to relax the body and improve focus. People may practice Taoist Yoga or tai chi first to build up energy, since this exercise can be tiring if done without good preparation.
The practice uses deep breathing into a special energy center called the dantian to create warmth and pressure in the lower belly. Energy moves between two main points: one near the heart and another near the kidneys. During the exercise, energy flows upward along one path when breathing in and downward along another path when breathing out, forming a circle. This helps keep the body's energy balanced and strong.
Important points along this path include the tailbone, a spot on the back near the heart, and the top of the head. These exercises are part of many Taoist practices aimed at improving health and preparing for deeper meditation. It's best to learn these techniques with a qualified teacher to avoid mistakes.
