Mihail Kogălniceanu-class river monitor

The Mihail Kogălniceanu-class river monitor is a group of three special ships used by the Romanian Naval Forces. These ships work on rivers and are part of a unit called Section I, 67th Artillery, Carrying Ships Division in the Romanian Danube Flotilla, which is located in the city of Brăila. River monitors like these help keep waterways safe and support important tasks for the country.

Specifications

These ships were built at the Drobeta-Turnu Severin shipyard. Each ship weighs 550 tons and is 52 meters long. They have two big diesel engines for power. The main weapons include two large 100mm guns, two smaller 30mm guns, and several machine guns and rocket launchers for defense.

• Mihail Kogălniceanu (M45). Launched in 1993 and still in service.
• Ion C. Brătianu (M46). Launched in 1995 and still in service.
• Lascăr Catargiu (M47). Launched in 1998 and still in service.

Service

In 2018, one ship from this class, Lascăr Catargiu (M47), joined the first joint exercises between Ukraine and Romania on the Danube River. The exercise, called Riverine-2018, helped different countries work together better on the river. It focused on practicing teamwork and improving skills for keeping the Danube River safe.
