Millet beer, also called Bantu beer, malwa, pombe, or opaque beer, is a special drink made from a type of grain called millet. It is very popular in many parts of Africa. People make this drink by using malted millet, which changes the grain so it can be used to make beer.

The way millet beer is made can be different depending on where you are in Africa. In the southern parts of the continent, it is often called umqombothi. The taste and how strong it is can also change a lot between different groups of people.

When people drink millet beer, they often serve it in special containers called calabash gourds. These are natural bowls made from dried gourds, and they are an important part of how the drink is enjoyed.

Production

Millet beer is a common drink in Africa. Other African drinks include maize beer and sorghum beer. In the Balkans and Turkey, a type of millet beer called boza is made. In the U.S., Sprecher Brewery makes a beer with millet and sorghum called Shakparo. A type of millet beer is also made by the Ainu.

Production process

Millet kernels are soaked in warm water until they sprout, which helps increase a sugar called maltose in the grain. After soaking, the millet is dried to stop the sprouting. The dried grain is then crushed and mixed with water to make something called wort. The wort is boiled to keep it safe from bacterial germs. Once it cools down, yeast is added, and the mixture is left to ferment. The whole process takes about five days.

Cultural significance

In many parts of West Africa, millet beer plays an important role in daily life. It is used in special events such as births, marriages, and funerals. It is also part of celebrations when welcoming guests, sealing agreements, or during social gatherings.

In some villages, women open their homes once a week to sell millet beer, creating a place for the community to come together. The beer is served in a special container called a calabash. People pour a few drops on the ground before drinking to honor their ancestors, and after drinking, they pour the remaining drops in a straight line.

Linguistics

Millet beer has many different names depending on where you are in Africa. In Uganda, it is called "Ajon" in Ateso and "Malwa" in Luganda. In Cameroon, it is known as "BilBil" in Guiziga, and in Kenya, it is called "Pombe" in Kiswahili. Other names include "Tchouk" in Togo, "Chibuku" in Southern and Central Africa, and "Dolo" in West Africa. It also goes by "Capalo" in Burkina Faso, "Mbege" in Tanzania, and "Mariisa" in Sudan.
