Mobile device
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
A mobile device or handheld device is a small computer you can hold and use with your hands. These devices usually run on batteries and have a flat-panel display along with special parts to help you control them, like a touchscreen or a keypad.
Today, most mobile devices are made to connect without wires. They can link to the Internet and to nearby gadgets, such as headphones or in-car entertainment systems. This is done using different kinds of connections like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular networks, or near-field communication.
Because they are portable and easy to use, mobile devices have become very important in our daily lives. People use them for many things, from talking and messaging to playing games and finding information quickly.
Characteristics
Mobile devices are small computers that you can hold and use with your hands. They are usually powered by batteries and have screens and ways to input information, like touchscreens or keypads. Many mobile devices can connect to the internet and other devices without wires, using methods like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
These devices can be carried with you, attached to something, or even built into other objects. For example, a smartphone is something you carry, while a device inside a car is built-in. Mobile devices come in different sizes, from very small ones you might not even notice to bigger ones like tablets. Some can even be worn on clothing! While many mobile devices connect to the internet without wires, they can also work when not connected, doing things like making calls or using apps.
Types
There are many kinds of mobile devices, made for different uses. These devices are small enough to hold in your hand and usually have a screen and a way to type or touch, like a touchscreen or buttons. Most modern mobile devices can connect to the internet and other devices without wires, using methods like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
History
The history of mobile devices shows how they have become more advanced over time. Early devices like pocket calculators, portable music players, GPS units, and digital cameras were good at one job but could not do many things. In the 1990s, personal digital assistants, or PDAs, became popular for writing notes, scheduling appointments, and setting reminders, acting as a smaller helper for laptops.
Around the same time, mobile phones changed from just making calls to sending text messages, connecting to the Internet, playing media, and even making video calls. These early mobile phones later evolved into smartphones, which bring together all these features and more into one device. Since the late 2000s, smartphones have become the most common type of mobile device around the world because they combine many technologies into one small device.
Uses
By the early 2010s, mobile devices started adding sensors like accelerometers, magnetometers, and gyroscopes to detect how they were moved or positioned. They could also use biometric features such as face recognition or fingerprint checks to confirm who was using them.
Handheld devices became tougher and easier to use for jobs outside offices. Workers could write notes, send and get invoices, manage items, record names, handle parts, and scan barcodes and RFID tags.
In 2009, new systems let handheld devices show video, audio, and drawings together, allowing people in different places to talk and see each other in real time. These devices come in many shapes, like smartphones, small PDAs, Ultra-mobile PC, and tablet computers including Palm OS and WebOS. Some let users watch television through the Internet. Mobile television receivers have been around since 1960, and in recent years, phone companies started adding TV to mobile phones.
In the 2010s, mobile devices often could share many kinds of information, no matter how far apart they were or what type they were. In medicine, they became important tools for looking up information about medicines, treatments, and even doing medical math. Because mobile gaming became so popular, some companies started putting casino games on these devices, which caused rules to be made to stop any unfair use.
In the military, mobile devices helped soldiers learn new skills and get information, no matter where they were stationed.
