Non-renewable resource

A non-renewable resource (also called a finite resource) is a natural resource that cannot be replaced quickly enough by nature to keep up with how much we use. This means once we take these resources, they are gone for a very long time. Examples include fuels made from old plants and animals, such as oil and gas, which are formed over millions of years under heat and pressure.

Other non-renewable resources include Earth’s minerals, metal ores, and even water in some places. Even though the basic building blocks like elements don’t disappear completely, we can run out of easily accessible supplies.

On the other hand, some resources, like timber when harvested sustainably, and wind for energy, can be used again and again because they can grow or return within our lifetimes. These are called renewable resources. Understanding the difference helps us think about how to take care of our planet for the future.

Earth minerals and metal ores

Earth minerals and metal ores are examples of non-renewable resources. Metals are found in large amounts in the Earth's crust, but humans can only extract them where natural processes have concentrated them enough to make it worth the effort. These natural processes, like heat, pressure, and movement of the Earth's plates, take thousands to millions of years.

The deposits of metal ores close to the surface that we can extract today are not renewable within human timeframes. Some rare earth minerals and elements are even more limited and are in high demand, especially for the electronics industry.

Fossil fuels

Natural resources like coal, petroleum (crude oil), and natural gas take thousands of years to form and can't be replaced quickly enough to keep up with how much we use them. Experts believe that someday, fossil fuels will become too expensive to get, and we will need to start using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power instead.

Right now, most of the energy we use comes from these non-renewable fossil fuels. Since the 1800s, when engines that burn fuel were invented, we have relied heavily on oil and other fossil fuels. Because of this, many of our systems for travel and daily life still depend on these types of engines. Many people worry that using so much fossil fuel is bad for the planet and helps cause climate change.

Nuclear fuels

Rössing uranium mine is the longest-running and one of the largest open pit uranium mines in the world; in 2005 it produced eight percent of global uranium oxide needs (3,711 tons). The most productive mines are the underground McArthur River uranium mine in Canada, which produces 13% of the world's uranium, and the underground poly-metallic Olympic Dam mine in Australia, which is mainly a copper mine, but contains the largest known reserve of uranium ore.

Nuclear fuels are special materials that help create energy through a process called fission. One common fuel is uranium, which is found in the ground but only in small amounts. We dig it up and use it in special reactors to make electricity.

There are concerns about the waste from nuclear power, as it can stay dangerous for a very long time. Scientists work hard to keep this waste safe and protect people and nature.

Land surface

Land surface can be thought of as both something that can be used again and something that cannot be replaced. We can reuse land, but we cannot make new land when we need it. This means land is a fixed resource that cannot be increased, no matter how much we might want more of it.

Renewable resources

Natural resources that can be replaced by nature are called renewable resources. These include things like water, forests, plants, and animals. As long as we take care of these resources, they can be used again and again.

We can also reuse materials by recycling them. This means turning old items into new resources instead of throwing them away. Renewable energy comes from sources like the sun, wind, and water, which will not run out. These energy sources are very important because they do not deplete like oil or gas, which are called non-renewable resources.

Economic models

In economics, a non-renewable resource is a type of goods that, when used more today, means there will be less available for tomorrow. Early work by David Ricardo looked at how prices for these resources change over time. He believed the price of a resource would go up because as it becomes harder to find, fewer resources are left.

One important idea is called Hotelling's rule, created in 1931 by Harold Hotelling. This rule explains that when we use a resource that cannot be replaced, the price of that resource will slowly increase each year. This happens because the resource becomes scarcer, and people are willing to pay more for what is left. Another idea, Hartwick's rule, talks about how to keep an economy strong even when using resources that do not come back.
