Nuphar is a group of plants that grow in water. These plants belong to a family called Nymphaeaceae and are found in cooler areas around the world, from temperate regions to subarctic places. People know these plants by several names. In Europe and Asia, they are often called water-lily, although this name is used for many similar plants. In North America, they may be called pond-lily, alligator-bonnet, bonnet lily, or spatterdock. These plants are important for the ecosystems where they live, providing homes and food for many animals and helping keep water clean.

Description

Nuphar plants are water plants that grow in lakes and ponds. They have special underground parts called rhizomes that help them stay in place. The leaves of these plants can be under the water, floating on the surface, or even sticking up out of the water. Their leaves come in many shapes, like egg-like or heart-like.

These plants also make beautiful flowers that float on the water or rise above it. The flowers usually have bright yellow, green, or red parts called sepals that protect the smaller petals inside. The flowers produce yellow or red parts called stamens and tiny seeds inside a fruit that grows on a stalk.

Taxonomy

The genus Nuphar was first described by James Edward Smith in 1809. It includes several species of aquatic plants commonly called water-lilies, pond-lilies, or spatterdock.

The genus has two main sections: Nuphar sect. Nuphar, which includes species like Nuphar lutea, and Nuphar sect. Astylus, which includes species like Nuphar advena. Recent studies show there are many species, with some sources listing around seventy. The Kew Gardens plant list includes over twenty accepted species and varieties.

Many fossil species of Nuphar have been discovered, showing that these plants have existed for a very long time.

Related taxa

In 2017, scientists found fossil seeds of a water lily called Notonuphar in Antarctica. These seeds look very similar to those of Nuphar, suggesting they are close relatives. This discovery helps explain the current distribution of Nuphar plants.

Etymology

The name Nuphar comes from medieval Latin, which borrowed the word from Arabic, Persian, and finally Sanskrit, where it referred to the blue lotus flower. In botanical terms, the name is considered feminine.

Habitat

Nuphar species grow in ponds, lakes, and slow-moving rivers, thriving in water up to 5 metres (16 feet) deep. Some species prefer nutrient-rich waters, like N. lutea, while others, such as N. pumila, grow better in nutrient-poor waters.

These plants live in wetland soils that lack oxygen, and they have special ways to cope. Young leaves bring in air filled with oxygen, which travels through the plant and leaves through older leaves, helping the plant survive in watery environments.

Ecology

Some types of Nuphar plants grow very quickly and can cover the whole surface of the water. This blocks sunlight and can harm other plants living underwater or on the water's surface. These plants also make natural chemicals that might keep away other plants, but scientists are still learning how important this is in nature.

Birds like certain ducks eat the seeds of Nuphar plants. Animals such as beaver and coypu eat the roots of some species, and deer eat the flowers and young leaves. The leaves are also eaten by other animals. The flowers of Nuphar are pollinated by flies, bees, and beetles.

Uses

Some kinds of these water plants have been used by people for food and other helpful things. Young parts of the plant were sometimes cooked, but they could be very bitter. The seeds, when fully grown, can be used in cooking and are tasty and good to eat, though it takes a lot of work to get them ready.

Parts of the plant also have special chemicals that might help with medicine, and some parts were used to help make leather and stop bleeding.
