Oppo is a large company that makes electronic products. It is based in Shenzhen, China, and was started in 2004. Oppo makes many kinds of items people use every day, such as smartphones, smart devices, audio devices, and power banks.

The company has become one of the biggest makers of smartphones in the world. It reaches about nine percent of the global market and has around 600 million users each month in more than 60 different countries. Oppo competes with other famous brands like Samsung and Xiaomi.

In addition to its own brand, Oppo also owns other smartphone brands, including Realme and OnePlus. This helps it offer many choices to customers around the world.

History

The brand name "Oppo" was registered in China in 2001 and started in 2004 by Tony Chen in Dongguan, China. In 2005, they showed their first device to the world, the Oppo X3 MP3 player. Since then, Oppo has grown to sell in over 50 countries and become a big name in electronics everywhere.

In June 2016, Oppo became the top smartphone maker in China, selling phones in more than 200,000 stores. In 2019, Oppo was fifth in the world for smartphone sales. By 2024, Oppo was fourth in the global smartphone market, with around 9% of all phones sold worldwide. That year, Oppo also ranked sixth globally for receiving patents, with over 54,000 granted.

Branding

Oppo has partnered with many famous people and teams to help share their brand. In 2010, they worked with a music group from South Korea called 2PM to launch their brand in Thailand. In 2015, Oppo became a sponsor for the famous Spanish football club FC Barcelona.

Oppo has also worked with sports leagues and teams, like the Philippine Basketball Association and the India national cricket team. They have sponsored big events such as the French Open tennis tournament in Paris and the Wimbledon Championships. Oppo also supports Riot Games and their League of Legends tournament. In 2024, they chose members of the music group Seventeen, specifically their subunit BSS, as brand ambassadors in the Asia-Pacific region.

Headphones and amplifiers

In 2015, Oppo released the HA-2, a portable version of the HA-1 amp/DAC. It had a battery pack and a leather case, and could play music in real-time to the HA-2 using a special cable. It could also be charged with a rapid charger kit. An updated version, the HA-2SE, came out in October 2016 with a new DAC chip.

Smartwatches

Oppo launched its first smartwatch, the OPPO Watch, on March 6, 2020, in China. The next year, they released the OPPO Watch 2, followed by the Watch 3 Pro in 2022, and the Watch 4 Pro in 2024.

Research and development

Oppo has developed special ways to make their phones charge really fast. These methods started in 2014 and have improved over the years. Some of these fast charging methods can charge a phone up to 67% in just 30 minutes, or even faster with newer versions.

In 2023, Oppo worked with Hasselblad to create better camera systems for their phones, which will appear in future models. Oppo also was ranked 9th in the world for the number of patents they applied for in 2023.

Oppo has faced some challenges in different countries. In 2022, a company named Nokia said Oppo used their technology without paying for it, and a court in Germany stopped Oppo from selling phones there for a while. In India, the government fined Oppo a large amount of money for not following tax rules. In 2025, phones sold in Thailand came with an app that was not allowed, and after people complained, the company said they would stop doing this.
