The Paschal Triduum, also known as the Easter Triduum, is a special three-day period in Christianity. It starts with the evening service on Maundy Thursday, reaches its peak during the Easter Vigil, and ends with evening prayers on Easter Sunday. This time remembers important events in the life of Jesus, including his suffering, death, and coming back to life, as told in the canonical Gospels.

Different Christian groups observe these days in slightly different ways. For example, in the Anglican, Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian, and Reformed traditions, these days connect the seasons of Lent and Easter. In the Roman Catholic Church, since changes were made in 1955, the Triduum is seen as its own special time apart from Lent and Easter.

In the past, these services started much earlier in the day. Today, after a special part of the service on Maundy Thursday, many churches stop using bells and organs until Easter Sunday. There are also some traditions, like not having weddings in certain Christian churches during these holy days, to show respect and focus on the important meanings behind these services.

Maundy Thursday (also called Holy Thursday)

Main article: Maundy Thursday

In many Christian traditions, the special three days begin on the evening of Maundy Thursday. During a special service called the Mass of the Lord's Supper, church bells may ring and organs may play at first. After a talk or message in the service, there is often a special ritual of washing of the feet. The service ends with a quiet procession to a special place called the altar of repose. This is followed by removing decorations from the church. Some people may spend time quietly thinking and praying after this service.

In older ways of doing the service, the Mass happened in the morning. Some people would visit seven different churches. Today, the service usually happens in the evening. The colour of the clothes worn by leaders and the decorations in the church can be white, scarlet, or gold, depending on the tradition.

Good Friday is a special day for Christians when they remember the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus. During services, a cross or crucifix is shown, and people show respect by kneeling or bowing.

The color used in these services can vary, often using red to represent Jesus' sacrifice, or black in some traditions. Different churches have their own ways of observing this important day.

Holy Saturday

Holy Saturday, sometimes called Black Saturday, is a special service held either in the evening of Holy Saturday or before dawn on Easter Sunday. It remembers Jesus' death, his time in quiet rest, and a story about his journey to help people.

During this service, there is a beautiful ceremony with darkness turning into light. A special candle, called the paschal candle, is lit from a new fire. This candle represents Jesus coming back to life. Everyone walks in a procession carrying this light to the altar. After this, people sit and listen to readings from old stories, including the tale of the Israelites being saved from the Red Sea during the first Passover.

Later in the service, the church lights come back on, and the organ and bells are used again. The paschal candle is also used to bless the water used in baptisms. This is a meaningful day for people becoming full members of the church through Baptism, Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist. The church is decorated in white and gold, and white and yellow flowers are often used. Easter Masses are held throughout the day, similar to the Easter Vigil Mass.

Eastertide

Main article: Eastertide

Easter is a special time for many Christians. The date of Easter changes each year. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon that happens on or after March 21. This date is based on an old tradition that marks the spring equinox, though it doesn't always match the actual astronomical equinox.

During Easter, churches often change their decorations. For example, on Maundy Thursday, the church may look simple with dim lights, getting ready for Good Friday, which remembers when Jesus was crucified. But by Easter Sunday, the church is bright and beautiful, with white and gold colors, celebrating Jesus' resurrection. The Easter season lasts for 50 days, ending with Pentecost Sunday. During this time, special clothes called vestments are usually white or gold, but red is used when remembering apostles and martyrs, and also on Pentecost Sunday.
