Perisphinctes is an extinct group of small sea creatures called ammonites. These creatures lived a very long time ago, during a time called the Middle to Late Jurassic period, which was millions of years before dinosaurs went extinct. Ammonites were part of a group of animals known as cephalopods, related to modern squids and octopuses, but they had spiral shells that often look like coiled shells or flowers.

One special thing about Perisphinctes is that scientists use them to help date rocks and understand how old they are. This is because Perisphinctes existed for a short time, so if we find their fossils in rock layers, we know those layers are from the same time they lived. This makes them what is called an index fossil.

One well-known species of Perisphinctes is called P. boweni, named after a scientist named E. J. Bowen, who studied Earth’s rocks and chemicals. These fossils help us learn more about life and Earth’s history during the age of the dinosaurs.

Etymology

The name Perisphinctes comes from an ancient Greek word meaning "around" and another word meaning "to bind tightly". This name describes the tightly coiled shell of these ancient sea creatures.

Distribution

Fossils of these ancient sea creatures have been discovered in many places around the world. They have been found in countries such as Antarctica, Argentina, Chile, and many others from the Middle to Late Jurassic period. This shows just how widespread these creatures were during their time.
