Polizia Penitenziaria

The Polizia Penitenziaria, also called the Corpo di Polizia Penitenziaria, is a special police group in Italy. It works under the Italian Ministry of Justice and helps keep prisons safe and secure. These officers are known as corrections officers, and they look after people who are serving their sentences in prison.

Because Vatican City is a small independent state without its own prisons, it sends people who break the law to use the Italian prison system instead.

The Polizia Penitenziaria has an important job across all of Italy. According to Interpol, they are responsible for making sure prisons are safe, protecting the people inside, and managing how they are moved from one place to another.

Uniform

• Winter and summer everyday uniforms: These include blue trousers and a blue tunic, a white shirt, and a tie. In winter, they also wear gloves and a hat, while in summer they wear the same but without gloves.
• Service uniforms: These are worn for regular duties and include a light blue beret instead of a hat. In summer, the tunic is made from lighter fabric and gloves are not worn.
• Operational uniforms: These are used for training and outdoor work and include a beret and a jacket in winter, or a short-sleeve shirt in summer.
• Special uniforms: There are also uniforms for ceremonies, parades, working with dogs, riding motorcycles, and other special duties.

The uniform a person wears can also change based on their rank and the type of work they are doing, such as office work, prison duties, or patrols.
