Principality of Nitra

The main gate of Nitra Castle, a historic landmark in Slovakia.

The Principality of Nitra was an early West Slavic group of settlements that grew up in the 9th century around the city of Nitra in what is now Slovakia. Sometimes called the Duchy of Nitra, this area was part of a rich and changing history during a time when many new groups were forming and growing. Because there are not many records from that time, much about the Principality of Nitra remains a mystery and is still discussed by historians today.

Some historians think that the Principality of Nitra was its own independent country for a time. They believe it may have been taken over by the larger Principality of Moravia around the years 833 or 870. Others believe that the area was always influenced by its neighbor, Moravia, from the very beginning. This debate shows how hard it can be to understand history when there are few clues left behind.

Background

Modern-day Slovakia was ruled by Germanic peoples, such as the Quadi and the Longobards, until the middle of the 6th century. Around that time, a new way of living began in the plains along the Middle Danube. This included handmade pottery, special burials, and small huts with corner ovens. This culture was very different from what came before.

Later, the nomadic Avars came from the Eurasian steppes and took control of the area. After some time, the Avars faced problems within their rule. In the early 7th century, the Slavs, also called Wends, fought back and chose a Frankish trader named Samo as their leader. Samo's group lasted for over 30 years but ended after his death, and Avar control returned.

When the Avar Khaganate fell around 803 due to attacks by the Franks, new groups of Slavs began to form in the area. This change also brought new ways of fighting and the growth of local leaders in places north of the Danube river and the Great Hungarian Plain in the early 9th century.
