History

William Marsh Rice's estate funded the establishment of the Rice Institute.

Rice University started with the life of William Marsh Rice, a businessman from Massachusetts. In 1891, Rice planned to create a school in Houston, Texas, that would not charge students for tuition. Sadly, Rice passed away in 1900, and there were problems with his will. After an investigation, his true wishes were followed, and the school was funded with a large amount of money.

The school, called the Rice Institute, began in 1912 with 59 students. Over time, it grew and added more programs. It became known as Rice University in 1960. The school has many different areas of study and has grown to cover a large area. It has also worked with important organizations, like NASA, and has built many buildings and programs over the years.
