Sir Richard Owen was an English biologist, comparative anatomist, and palaeontologist. He lived from 20 July 1804 to 18 December 1892 and was known for his amazing skill in studying and understanding fossils.

Owen is most famous for creating the word Dinosauria, which means "Terrible Reptile" or "Fearfully Great Reptile". He did not agree with Charles Darwin's idea of evolution by natural selection, though he did believe that evolution happened. Owen thought the process was more complicated than Darwin described.

Owen helped start the Microscopical Society of London and worked hard to give natural specimens from the British Museum their own special place. Because of his efforts, the world-famous Natural History Museum was built in South Kensington, London in 1881. Many people think he changed what museums are for by making them places for everyone to learn and enjoy.

Even though Owen did many important things for science, he was sometimes argued with by other scientists. Some people even said he took credit for work done by others.

Biography

Owen was the driving force behind the establishment, in 1881, of the British Museum (Natural History) in London.

Sir Richard Owen was a talented scientist who studied animals and fossils. He started learning about medicine in 1820 and later joined the Royal College of Surgeons in 1826. In 1836, he became a teacher at the same college, and in 1849, he took care of the Hunterian Museum.

Owen worked hard to create a big museum for natural history. Because of his efforts, many collections moved to a new building in South Kensington, which is now called the Natural History Museum. He kept working there until 1883, when he was honored with a special title. Owen died at home in 1892 and was buried in a churchyard near Richmond, Surrey.

Work on invertebrates

Sir Richard Owen studied many small animals and sea creatures. He wrote important papers about them for over fifty years. One of his first big works was about the pearly Nautilus, which became a classic study. He also discovered the first sponge known as the Venus' Flower Basket and found a tiny parasite called Trichina spiralis that causes a disease in people called trichinosis. Owen studied special sea creatures called Brachiopoda and helped scientists understand them better. He also described many kinds of Mollusca, including the pearly nautilus and another sea creature called Spirula. In 1852, Owen named Protichnites, which were the oldest footprints ever found on land. Using his knowledge, he guessed these footprints were made by an ancient type of arthropod, similar to the living Limulus.

Fish, reptiles, birds, and naming of dinosaurs

Sir Richard Owen studied many ancient animals, especially reptiles. He wrote important books about fossils found in Britain. One of his biggest ideas was naming a special group of ancient reptiles called Dinosauria, which means "Terrible Reptile." He used three different dinosaur examples to describe this group: a meat-eating dinosaur called Megalosaurus, a plant-eating dinosaur called Iguanodon, and an armored dinosaur called Hylaeosaurus. These fossils were found in southern England.

Owen worked with another scientist, Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, to make huge models of how dinosaurs might have looked. Some of these models were first shown at a big exhibition in 1851, and later, more were made when a famous building called the Crystal Palace was moved to a new park in London.

Work on mammals

Owen had special permission to study any newly deceased animal from the London Zoo. Once, his wife found the body of a rhinoceros in their hallway!

He also studied fossils found in New South Wales. Owen wrote many papers about extinct mammals from Australia, describing huge ancient animals like Diprotodon and Thylacoleo, as well as giant kangaroos and wombats. He became an expert on fossils from Australia and New Zealand. He also wrote books about fossils from the British Isles, including History of British Fossil Mammals and Birds in 1844–1846.

Owen, Darwin, and the theory of evolution

During the 1840s, Owen began to think that species might change over time through different processes. He considered several ideas about how this might happen, though he thought one idea — that species could change into new ones — was the least likely.

Owen faced criticism for his ideas about evolution. After publishing some of his thoughts, he was challenged by other scientists. One big debate happened when Owen, as president-elect of the British Association, shared his studies of primate brains. He claimed that human brains had special structures that ape brains did not, making humans unique. This started a long dispute known as the Great Hippocampus Question.

Later, Thomas Huxley arranged demonstrations showing ape brain anatomy. These demonstrations were used to challenge Owen’s claims. The debate continued for two years and had a big impact on the scientific community. Huxley argued that differences in brain size among humans of different races blurred the lines between humans and apes. Owen replied that all human races had similarly sized brains and intellectual abilities, and that humans were still distinct from apes because human brains were much larger compared to their body size.

Legacy

Sir Richard Owen was the first director of the Natural History Museum in London. His statue used to stand in the main hall there until 2009, when it was replaced with a statue of Darwin. A bust of Owen made by Alfred Gilbert in 1896 is kept in the Hunterian Museum, London.

A type of lizard from Central America, called Diploglossus owenii, was named after him by French scientists André Marie Constant Duméril and Gabriel Bibron in 1839. In 2025, a fossil snake found near Hordle Cliff was named Paradoxophidion richardoweni to honor Owen’s important work on fossil snakes and his help in creating the Natural History Museum, where the fossil had been kept since 1981.

There is a pub named The Sir Richard Owen Wetherspoons pub in central Lancaster, named in his honor.

Conflicts with his peers

Sir Richard Owen faced criticism from his peers for his behaviour. Some described him as harsh and unfair, even saying he enjoyed being difficult to others. He often claimed discoveries for himself that others had made, such as taking credit for finding the dinosaur Iguanodon instead of the real discoverer, Gideon Mantell. Owen also tried to stop some of Mantell's work from being shared with the world.

Owen disagreed strongly with Charles Darwin’s ideas about how species change over time. Some believe Owen was jealous because Darwin’s book was so well-known. Owen even wrote an article without using his name to criticise Darwin while praising his own work. Despite these conflicts, Owen continued to work in science even after retiring, though his reputation never fully recovered.
