Recently, Saudi Arabia also began participating in the Winter Olympic Games, making its debut in 2022 in Beijing, China. This shows the country's growing interest in many kinds of sports around the world.

Women's participation in the Olympics

Sarah Attar is a track and field athlete who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics as one of the first two female Olympians representing Saudi Arabia. She also competed in the marathon at the 2016 Olympics.

For many years, women were not allowed to compete for Saudi Arabia in the Olympics. This changed in 2012 when the country agreed to let female athletes join the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Two women were allowed to compete that year. One was Wojdan Shaherkani in judo, and the other was 800-meter runner Sarah Attar. Before this, some people had asked that Saudi Arabia not be allowed to join the Olympics until it let women compete.
