Tourism in Bangkok

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is one of the world's top tourist cities. Every year, about 22.7 million people from other countries visit Bangkok. It has been named the most visited city in the world several times, including in 2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2018, by MasterCard's Global Destination Cities Index.

Bangkok is the main entry point for tourists coming to Thailand. In 2010, more than 26 million people, both from Thailand and other countries, visited the city. Many visitors stay in its many hotels and enjoy the city's shops, food, and activities.

The city has many famous places to see, such as royal palaces, temples, and museums. Visitors also love to shop and try different kinds of food. Bangkok is known for its lively evenings, though some less family-friendly activities exist and are not encouraged by the government.

Palaces and wats

Bangkok has been Thailand's capital since 1782. The city has many palaces, some still used by the Thai royal family and others open to visitors. The Grand Palace has been the official home of Thailand's kings for over 200 years. It includes important places like Wat Phra Kaew, which holds the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most important temple treasure.

Bangkok is also home to many Buddhist temples, called wats. Some popular ones include Wat Arun, known for its tall chedi, and Wat Pho, which has a huge reclining Buddha covered in gold. Wat Suthat features the Giant Swing, and Wat Saket has a tall chedi called the Golden Mount.

Public parks

Queen Sirikit Park was created to celebrate the queen's 60th birthday and includes a large pool with fountains and beautiful flowers. Lumphini Park is a big open space given to the people of Bangkok by King Rama VI. The Princess Mother Memorial Park shows memories of the Princess Mother's life and childhood home. Nagaraphirom Park is a small, peaceful park near the Grand Palace, and Santichaiprakarn Park is a lovely spot by the river with old buildings and trees.

Museums

Bangkok has many interesting museums that show different parts of Thai culture and history. Some museums are inside universities, like Chulalongkorn University, which has museums about the human body, animals, rocks, and more. The National Gallery Museum shows beautiful paintings, including some made by the King many years ago.

The National Museum is in an old palace and has important rooms used by kings in the past. The Suan Pakkad Palace has many valuable items from Asia, including old art and special shells. The Vimanmek Mansion Museum is a huge old house made of gold-colored wood, filled with treasures from royalty.

Other museums include the Siriraj Medical Museum, which shows the history of medicine, and the Museum of Siam, which tells stories about the people of Bangkok. Each museum offers a unique look at Thailand’s rich culture and history.

Cruise

The Chao Phraya River and Bangkok's canals were once so many that people called the city the "Venice of the East". Today, you can still see parts of this old way of life by taking a boat or cruise along the river. Dinner cruises are especially nice at night when the city lights reflect beautifully on the water.

Cultural performances

The Jim Thompson Museum was built by an American named Jim Thompson using traditional Thai houses. After World War II, Thompson helped bring back Thailand's silk industry. When he went missing in 1967, his home became a museum showing beautiful Asian art.

M.R. Kukrit's House is a traditional wooden house in Bangkok. It was once home to M.R. Kukrit Pramoj, a former Prime Minister of Thailand. The house keeps many pieces of Thai culture and wisdom.

Other fun places to visit include the Khlong Bang Luang Artist House, an old wooden house with art and puppet shows, and Lhong 1919, a restored warehouse that teaches about Thai-Chinese history and culture.

There are also many great theatres in Bangkok. The National Theatre shows the beautiful "Khon" dance performances. The Chaloem Krung Royal Theatre puts on Thai plays and dramas. The Traditional Thai Puppet Theatre features the "Hun Lakhon Lek" puppet shows based on the Thai version of the Ramayana story.

Siam Niramit is a huge theatre in the center of Bangkok with amazing cultural shows. It uses special effects and many performers to tell stories from Thailand's history and mythology.

Hotels

Bangkok has many fancy hotels, like the Peninsula Bangkok, which was ranked number 4 on a top hotels list in 2006. On Sukhumvit Road, you can find big international hotel brands such as JW Marriott, InterContinental, and Sheraton, along with unique smaller hotels.

The city also has many budget-friendly hotels, especially around Yaowarat Road and Khaosan Road, popular with travelers looking for affordable stays. Small, special guesthouses are growing in areas like Phloen Chit, Watthana, and Khlong Toei.

Shopping

Thailand offers many fun places to shop, from busy street markets to fancy luxury malls. Tourists love visiting markets and bazaars the most. The Chatuchak weekend market is one of the biggest and most popular spots in Bangkok. Though water markets are becoming rare, they are still exciting for visitors because tours go through the canals where these markets are found.

Bangkok has more than 15 huge malls, especially around Sukhumvit Road and Ploenchit-Ratchaprasong. There are about 25 malls, 35 lifestyle shopping centers, 40 big stores, 55 superstores, and 1,100 small convenience stores all around the city.

Shopping in Bangkok isn’t just in one or two places. There are many areas with lots of choices and easy ways to get around. Some of the main shopping spots include:

Phloen Chit-Ratchaprasong (เพลินจิต-ราชประสงค์): This area has top department stores and fancy malls like Gaysorn Plaza, Isetan, Erawan Bangkok, and Peninsula Plaza. Together, they form the biggest shopping walk in Bangkok. Central World Plaza and Narayana Phand Pavilion are home to a special handicraft center with items from all over the country. Ratchaprasong intersection leads to many shopping places such as Phloen Chit-Sukhumvit, Siam Square-Mahboonkrong, Silom, and Pratunam-Phetchaburi.

Silom-Surawong-Patpong (สีลม-สุรวงศ์-พัฒพงษ์): Silom Road is a major shopping street, with Surawong Road running beside it and Patpong crossing between them. This area has many special shops, well-known stores, and several shopping plazas. You can also find street stalls, especially at Patpong’s famous night market.

Pratunam-Phetchaburi (ประตูน้ำ-เพชรบุรี): Pratunam market is a big spot for buying ready-to-wear clothes.

MBK Center (มาบุญครอง): This shopping center and the Siam Square (สยามสแควร์) area are great for finding bargains.

Local life
