Transamerica Pyramid
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The Transamerica Pyramid is a pyramid-shaped 48-story modernist skyscraper in San Francisco, California, United States. It is the second tallest building in the San Francisco skyline. Located at 600 Montgomery Street between Clay and Washington Streets in the city's Financial District, it was the tallest building in San Francisco from its completion in 1972 until 2017 when the newly constructed Salesforce Tower surpassed its height.
Designed by architect William Pereira and built by Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company, the building stands at 853 feet (260 m). When it was completed in 1972, it was the eighth-tallest building in the world. Though it no longer houses the headquarters of the Transamerica Corporation, which moved to Baltimore, Maryland, the building remains well known because it appears on the company's logo.
In 2020, the building was sold to NYC investor Michael Shvo, who hired Norman Foster in 2022 to redesign the interiors and renovate the building. Today, the Transamerica Pyramid is a popular tourist site.
History
The area where the Transamerica Pyramid stands is very important in San Francisco's history. The building is on land that was once the shoreline of Yerba Buena Cove, where the city of Yerba Buena was founded in 1834. The building was built on the site of an old structure called the Montgomery Block, which was demolished in 1959.
The Transamerica Pyramid was built by the Transamerica Corporation, starting in 1969 and finishing in 1972. It has 48 floors and stands 853 feet tall. When it was built, it was the tallest building in San Francisco until 2017, when the Salesforce Tower was completed. The pyramid shape was chosen so that light could reach the street below. Although some people did not like the design at first, it has become a famous symbol of the city.
In 1999, Transamerica was bought by a company called Aegon, and the company's main offices were moved out of the building. By 2011, Transamerica had left San Francisco completely, moving its headquarters to Baltimore. In 2020, the building was sold to new owners who plan to renovate it.
Design
The Transamerica Pyramid is a tall, pyramid-shaped building with four sides. It has special features like an elevator shaft and a stairwell built into its design. At the very top, there is a tall spire with cameras that show live views of San Francisco. These views can be watched inside the building.
During special times like Christmas and Independence Day, a bright light called the "Crown Jewel" shines at the top of the building.
Park
At the base of the building is a half-acre privately owned public space called Redwood Park. It was designed by Tom Galli and has many redwood trees that were moved from the Santa Cruz Mountains. The park includes a fountain and pond with a bronze sculpture of a jumping frog and lily pads, remembering a story called "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" by Mark Twain. There is also a bronze sculpture of children playing and a plaque honoring two dogs named Bummer and Lazarus known for catching rats. Benches and tables give people a place to rest.
Specifications
The Transamerica Pyramid has a light-colored exterior made from crushed quartz. Its base is made of a lot of concrete and steel rebar, and it has 3,678 windows. Only two of its 18 elevators go all the way to the top floor.
The building stands where A. P. Giannini’s Bank of Italy was kept after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed its office. Giannini later started Transamerica, and the Bank of Italy became Bank of America. There is a plaque at the base to honor two famous dogs, Bummer and Lazarus. Underneath the building lies part of an old ship called the whaling vessel Niantic, a reminder of the California Gold Rush time, marked by a historical sign outside (California Historical Landmark #88).
The building’s top has a glass pyramid with bright lights for airplanes and visitors. Because of its unique shape, most windows can turn so they can be cleaned from inside. Construction started in 1969, and people began working there in the summer of 1972.

Some companies and groups have offices in the Transamerica Pyramid. These include Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Greenhill & Co., Heller Manus Architects, Mars Inc., Pantheon Ventures, TSG Consumer Partners, and URS Corporation, along with others like ATEL Capital Group, Crux Informatics, Incapture Group, On Lok, Rembrandt Venture Partners, and Union Square Advisors LLC.
