Trump family

The Trump family is a well-known and wealthy American family. The most famous member is Donald Trump, who served as the 45th and is now the 47th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 and again from 2025 onward. Because of this role, they are the current first family of the United States.

The family has German roots and has been involved in many areas such as business, entertainment, politics, and real estate. Besides Donald Trump, other important members of the family include his father, Fred Trump, and his grandfather, Frederick Trump. Their influence and activities have made them a notable part of American history and culture.

Ivana Trump was Donald Trump’s first wife. She was born in Czechoslovakia and became a fashion model and businesswoman. She helped design important buildings like Trump Tower.

Marla Maples was Donald Trump’s second wife. She was an actress and model. They married in 1993 and divorced in 1999.

Melania Trump

Melania Trump is Donald Trump’s third and current wife. She was a model from Slovenia. They married in 2005, and she became a U.S. citizen in 2006. She and her son Barron moved to the White House in 2017 after her husband became president.

Donald Trump has five children from his three marriages: Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric from his first marriage; Tiffany from his second marriage; and Barron from his third marriage.

Ancestry

The Trump family comes from Germany. Their ancestor, Hanns Drumpf, lived in a village called Kallstadt in 1608. Over time, the family name changed from Drumpf to Trump.

Johannes Trump, born in 1789, became a winegrower in Kallstadt. His grandson, Friedrich Trump, was born in 1869. Many in the family worked growing wine. One of Johannes Trump's sisters married into the family that started the Heinz company.

Donald Trump's father, Fred Trump, grew up speaking German but later told people he was of Swedish heritage. Donald Trump later embraced his German roots. The Trump family in Germany were Lutheran, and Donald Trump's parents were members of a Presbyterian church in New York.

Donald Trump's father, Fred Trump (1905–1999), was born in New York and became a well-known real estate developer in New York City. In 1927, he and his mother started a company called E. Trump & Son. They built many homes in Queens, housing for U.S. Navy personnel, and over 27,000 apartments in New York City.

Mary Anne MacLeod Trump

Mary Anne MacLeod Trump (1912–2000) was born in Tong, a small village near Stornoway in the Western Isles of Scotland. At 17, she moved to the United States with very little money and found work as a maid in New York. She met Fred Trump there, and they married in 1936 in Queens. Mary became a U.S. citizen in 1942. In 2008, Donald Trump said he felt a connection to Scotland during a visit there.

Frederick Trump

In 1885, Donald Trump's grandfather, Friedrich Trump, moved from Kallstadt, Palatinate (then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria), to the United States when he was 16 years old. He changed his name to Frederick when he became a U.S. citizen in 1892. During the Klondike Gold Rush, he made a lot of money by opening a restaurant and hotel in Bennett and later Whitehorse for people traveling to find gold.

Elizabeth Christ Trump

Donald Trump's grandmother, Elizabeth Christ Trump, was born in 1880 and passed away on June 6, 1966. She married Frederick Trump in 1902 and moved to the United States with him. She was also from Kallstadt, born to Philipp and Marie Christ. Elizabeth was related to organ builder Johann Michael Hartung through her grandparents.

Heraldry

Joseph E. Davies, who was married to Marjorie Merriweather Post, received a special family symbol called a coat of arms in 1939. After Donald Trump bought Mar-a-Lago, the home Post built, in 1985, his company began using a changed version of this symbol at Trump golf courses and properties.

In 2008, Trump tried to use this symbol at his new golf course in Balmedie, Scotland, but was told he needed approval. In 2011, a new symbol was created for the golf club there. This symbol shows elements representing Scotland and America, with a motto meaning "Never Give Up," which reflects Trump's attitude. Starting in 2014, Trump used the same symbol at his golf resort in Ireland.
