Tórshavn
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Tórshavn is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. It is found on the east coast of the island called Streymoy. The city has a population of about 14,000 people, and when you count the nearby areas too, there are around 22,000 people living there.
Long ago, in the year 850, people from Norse or Scandinavians traditions set up their parliament on a place called the Tinganes peninsula. That is how Tórshavn became the capital of the Faroe Islands, and it has stayed that way ever since. For a long time, Tórshavn was the only place where people on the islands could buy and sell things. This changed in 1856 when the rule was dropped, and people could trade freely everywhere.
History
The history of Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands, goes back many years. In the 9th century, Viking settlers held meetings in different parts of the islands. It is said that the main meeting place was in Tórshavn around 825, on a peninsula called Tinganes that divides the harbour into two parts.
Over time, Tórshavn grew from a simple meeting place into a small town. In 1271, it became an important trading spot under Norwegian rule. Later, it was also the home of government officials. In the 1600s, a small fort was built, and the town slowly expanded. By the 1800s, Tórshavn became the official capital and continued to grow, especially after free trade began in 1856. Today, it is the largest city in the Faroe Islands.
Climate
Tórshavn has a cool and mild climate, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Winters are cloudy and stormy but still quite mild, with temperatures usually around 6 °C (43 °F). Summers are cool, with temperatures rarely going above 13 °C (55 °F). The city gets the most rain in the autumn and winter, especially in January, while spring and summer months are drier but still see a fair amount of rain.
