University of Milano-Bicocca

The University of Milano-Bicocca (Italian: Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca, UNIMIB) is a public university in Milan, Italy. It offers many kinds of studies, including undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. The university opened its doors in 1998 to help ease the crowded classes at the University of Milan.

In 2014, a big ranking called the Times Higher Education put the University of Milano-Bicocca at number 21 among the best universities in the world that were less than 50 years old. It was the top university in Italy for that ranking. Today, it remains an important place for learning and research in the heart of Milan.

History

The University of Milano-Bicocca started because the University of Milan had too many students—about 90,000 in the 1990s—and needed more space. They chose a big area in the north of Milan called the Bicocca, which used to be an industrial complex, for the new university campus. This was part of a bigger plan to renew the city. The university officially opened its doors on June 10, 1998.

Today, Milano-Bicocca is a university where students can study many different subjects. These include Economics, Informatics, Statistics, Law, Education, Sociology, Medicine and Surgery, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Physics and Astrophysics, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Biotechnology, and Psychology. It offers programs for students at different levels, from beginning students to those preparing for advanced careers.

Campus

The University of Milano-Bicocca is found in an area north of Milan that used to belong to the Pirelli factory. Architect Vittorio Gregotti helped turn this old factory space into a new home for the university, with places for research and student housing.

The university offers medical courses in Italian in Monza and in English at the Pope John XXIII Hospital in Bergamo.

Organization

The University of Milano-Bicocca has fourteen Departments and two Schools. These include Departments of Economics and Statistics, Business and Law, Biotechnology and Biosciences, Physics, Informatics, Mathematics, Materials Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Law, Medicine and Surgery, Psychology, Human Sciences for Education, and Sociology and Social Research. There are also Schools of Economics and Science.

Since the university opened, the number of students has grown steadily. In its first year, there were 15,300 students. By 2003-2004, this number had risen to 27,481, and by 2005-2006, there were over 30,000 students. In 2023, the university has almost 40,000 students.

Research Centre in the Maldives

The University of Milano-Bicocca opened a special place for studying the sea and learning more in a town called Magoodhoo in the Maldives in 2011. This place is called the Marine Research and Higher Education Centre. However, not many people from the Maldives have finished studying there. One reason is that students need to know Italian very well to join, and there are not many chances to learn easier levels first. Also, not many people from the Maldives have helped write research papers with the centre.

Rankings

The University of Milano-Bicocca was started in 1998 to help ease the crowded University of Milan. In 2014, it was placed 21st in the world among universities less than 50 years old, and it was the top university in Italy in that group.
