Utahceratops

Utahceratops was an extinct genus of ceratopsian dinosaur that lived about 76.4 to 75.5 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Utah. This dinosaur was a large, strong, and sturdy creature that walked on all four legs. It was a plant-eater and could grow to be about 4.5 to 5 meters, or 15 to 16 feet, long. Scientists discovered fossils of Utahceratops, which helped them learn more about the diverse animals that lived millions of years ago. This dinosaur is especially interesting because it shows how big and strong some plant-eating dinosaurs were during the time when many famous dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
Discovery
The name Utahceratops means "horned face from Utah". It comes from the state of Utah and Greek words for "horn" and "face". The species name gettyi honors Mike Getty, who found the first fossils and helped discover many other fossils in the Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. The dinosaur was first described in 2010 by a team of scientists led by Scott D. Sampson, Mark A. Loewen, and Andrew A. Farke.
Description
Utahceratops was a large dinosaur that lived about 76 to 75 million years ago. Scientists know about this dinosaur from several fossils, including parts of the skull and skeleton. They think Utahceratops could grow up to 4.5 to 5 metres (about 15 to 16 feet) long and weigh around 2 tonnes (or 2.2 tons).
Some special features of Utahceratops include a horn on its nose that sits mostly behind its nose opening, short and strong horns above its eyes, and long, low bony plates along the sides of its frill. The middle part of the bony roof on its head also curves forward.
Phylogeny
Utahceratops has been grouped as an early member of a group of dinosaurs called chasmosaurines. It shares this group with another dinosaur called Pentaceratops.
The family tree of these dinosaurs was studied by Longrich in 2014, who described a new type of Pentaceratops and looked at many chasmosaurine species.
Paleoecology
Habitat
The only known fossils of Utahceratops were found in the Kaiparowits Formation in Utah. Scientists have determined that this area was formed between 76.6 and 74.5 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period. At that time, the land where Utahceratops lived was close to the shore of a big inland sea that split North America into two parts: Laramidia to the west and Appalachia to the east. The area was a wet floodplain with many rivers, swamps, ponds, and lakes, surrounded by higher land. The climate was warm and wet, allowing many different kinds of plants and animals to live there. This place has some of the best records of life from that time in the world.
Paleofauna
Utahceratops lived together with many other dinosaurs, such as dromaeosaurid theropods, the troodontid Talos sampsoni, tyrannosaurids like Teratophoneus, armored ankylosaurids, the duckbilled hadrosaurs Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus and Gryposaurus monumentensis, the ceratopsians Nasutoceratops titusi and Kosmoceratops richardsoni, and the oviraptorosaurian Hagryphus giganteus. Some signs suggest that the tyrannosaurid Albertosaurus and the ornithomimid Ornithomimus velox might have also lived there, but this is not certain. Other animals in this area included sharks and rays, frogs, salamanders, turtles, lizards, and crocodiles. Early mammals were also present, such as multituberculates, marsupials, and insectivorans.
