Vans is an American brand known for making clothes, accessories, and special shoes for skateboarding. It started a long time ago in Anaheim, California, and is now owned by VF Corporation.
Besides skateboarding, Vans also supports athletes who ride surfboards, snowboards, ride BMX bikes, and race motocross. This shows how much they care about action sports.
From 1996 to 2019, and starting again in 2025, Vans was one of the main sponsors of the Warped Tour music festival, which brought together lots of music fans and performers.
History
Paul Van Doren, his brother James, and Gordon C. Lee opened the first Vans store, called "The Van Doren Rubber Company," on March 16, 1966, in Anaheim, California. The store made and sold shoes right to customers. On the first day, twelve people bought Vans shoes, which were similar to another brand called Keds but had a thicker sole. The shoes cost between US$2.49 and $4.99.
In the 1970s, a young boy named Mark Van Doren created the first Vans skateboard logo in Costa Mesa, California. His design was a simple stencil that could be painted onto skateboards. In 1976, Vans started using the phrase "Off The Wall," which skateboarders used when doing tricks. That same year, Vans introduced two famous designs: the Side-stripe and the #36, also called the "Old Skool."
Vans faced tough times in the 1980s with many fake copies of their shoes. They lowered prices and had to file for bankruptcy protection. Later, they were sold to a banking firm. By the early 1990s, Vans became very popular again and started selling shoes for snowboarding too. In 2004, Vans joined with VF Corporation, a bigger company.
In 2016, Vans celebrated its 50th birthday with a new logo and plans to reach more people. In 2022, they introduced a new line of shoes made with environmentally friendly materials. In August 2025, Vans chose famous singer SZA to help create new designs. Later that year, they worked with a Swedish designer on a special edition of their classic shoes.
Partnerships
Since 1999, Vans has supported Warped Tour, a big music festival that travels around North America. In 2001, the festival was called Vans Warped Tour.
In 2014, Vans became the main sponsor of the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California. In 2022, Vans hosted a fun BMX competition called the BMX Waffle Cup at their skate park in Huntington Beach. The skate park was changed just for this event, with help from BMX riders, to match the style of the US Open.
Public skate parks
Vans opened its first skatepark in 1998 at The Outlets at Orange in Orange, California. This skatepark has a large indoor area for skateboarding, special spots for beginners, small ramps, and an outdoor course. It was updated in 2009.
The company built another skatepark in Huntington Beach, California, which opened in 2010. This park has a big bowl for skateboarding and a large plaza to ride on. It covers a wide area, and Vans pays the city a small amount each year to use the space.
There is also a skatepark called House of Vans in London, located in The Old Vic Tunnels.
In popular culture
Vans' shoes are often decorated by people who wear them, and many of these designs have become official styles of the company. A well-known design is the checkerboard pattern, which became popular in ska and punk music groups after skateboarders started drawing it on their shoes.
Vans became very popular when actor Sean Penn wore Vans shoes in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982. In 2016, a funny internet video called "Damn Daniel" featuring a teen named Daniel Lara wearing Vans became extremely popular. To show appreciation, Vans gave Daniel a lifetime supply of their shoes. Baseball player Michael Lorenzen, who grew up skateboarding, wears special Vans shoes with cleats instead of regular baseball shoes. In 2023, he became the first baseball pitcher to throw a no-hitter while wearing Vans, and those shoes will be kept in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. In a novel from 2021, a teenage character named Izzy Muraro is described as wearing almost only Vans clothes.
