Veracruz, also known as Heroica Veracruz, is a major port city in Mexico. It is located along the Gulf of Mexico, about 90 km southeast of the state capital, Xalapa. As the most populous city in the state of Veracruz, it plays an important role in the region's history and economy.

The city was founded in 1519 by the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés, who named it Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. It was the first Spanish settlement on the mainland of the Americas to receive a coat-of-arms. Over the centuries, Veracruz has been a key port and a center of trade, sometimes even wealthier than Mexico City itself.

Throughout its history, Veracruz has faced many challenges, including pirate raids and invasions by France and the United States. Today, the port remains vital for Mexico's imports and exports, especially for the automotive industry. The city also boasts a rich mix of indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean cultures, which is reflected in its delicious food and lively music.

Etymology

The name Veracruz, originally Vera Cruz, comes from the Latin words "Vera Crux," meaning "True Cross." When explorer Hernán Cortés founded a settlement called Villa Rica (Rich Village) on Good Friday, April 22, 1519, he dedicated it to the True Cross as a special offering.

History

Viceroyalty of New Spain (1518–1821)

Spanish explorer Juan de Grijalva arrived in 1518, along with Bernal Díaz del Castillo, at an island they named San Juan de Ulúa after landing on the Christian feast of John the Baptist. The name comes from the local Aztec word.

The city of Veracruz was founded in 1519 by Hernán Cortés. At that time, the area was part of the Aztec Empire ruled by Moctezuma II. Cortés and his men landed near a place called Chalchihuecan and named their settlement Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. “Villa Rica” meant “rich village” because they found gold there, and “Vera Cruz” or “True Cross” was added because they landed on Good Friday.

The city moved several times over the years. By 1525, it was relocated to a place called Antigua. Many native people suffered from diseases brought by Europeans. The city became an important port, and many ships stopped there.

Mexico (since 1821)

Veracruz defended itself against several attacks and earned the title of “Heroic City” more than once. In 1847, during a war between Mexico and the United States, the city was invaded. Later, during a big change in Mexico’s government, leaders used Veracruz as a base.

20th century

By 1902, the port of Veracruz needed new buildings and better ways to move goods. The government worked with others to improve it. In 1914, during a time of fighting in Mexico, the United States occupied the port for a short time.

21st century

In 2010, a big storm named Hurricane Karl caused flooding and damage, affecting many people in the area.

Veracruz is a city where many cultures meet. It is Mexico's main port on the Caribbean and Atlantic seas, bringing together people from Spain, Native Mexican groups, and Africa. During the time when Mexico was ruled by Spain, African slaves were brought here to work. After Mexico became independent in 1821, people from Italy and Cuba also came to live in the city.

One big celebration in Veracruz is the Carnaval. It started in 1866 and is one of the largest in the country. The fun begins with the "Burning of Bad Humor" and ends with the "Burial of Juan Carnaval." People enjoy parades and dances during this time.

Music is important in Veracruz. The song "La Bamba" became famous worldwide thanks to Ritchie Valens, but it started as part of the local "son" music style. Another popular style is "Son Jarocho," which is often performed in the city's main square.

The food in Veracruz uses many local fruits and vegetables, like chili peppers, avocados, and pineapples. The city also has coffeehouses where people gather to chat and enjoy drinks.

Port of Veracruz

The Port of Veracruz is Mexico's oldest and largest port, playing a key role in the country's history. During colonial times, it was the main port for trade with Spain. Goods like turkeys, corn, and cotton were sent to Spain, while items such as wheat and wine arrived from there. Over time, the port's importance changed with shifts in trade and industry, but it remains very important today.

In the 1990s, changes were made to improve how the port worked, and private companies began operating there. Today, the port handles many types of cargo, including a large share of Mexico's automobile exports. It is especially well-suited for automobile shipping, being closer to factories and major markets than other ports.

Education

The Universidad Veracruzana began in 1944 by combining several schools. It is the main place for higher learning in the state of Veracruz, with five main campuses and many smaller locations. About 70,000 students study there in sixty different subjects.

Other schools include Cristóbal Colón University, which focuses on architecture and management, and UNIMEX, started in 1991, which specializes in marketing, design, and law.

The Veracruz Institute of Technology started in 1946 to prepare students for jobs in the growing port and industries of the city. It began with secondary and high school education and later added university programs. In the 1960s, technical programs were introduced and have become a key part of the school’s work.

Transportation

Veracruz International Airport serves the city with daily flights to Mexico City and international flights to Dallas Fort Worth and Houston. Airlines such as Aeroméxico, United Airlines, American Airlines, Viva, Volaris, and Aerus operate at the airport.

Rail transport connects Veracruz with Mexico City and Xalapa. The city is linked to Mexico City by a four-lane toll highway, passing through Córdoba and Puebla. There are also highways connecting to Villahermosa, Tabasco and Xalapa. While the tram system that operated from 1908 to 1981 is no longer in use, the city now has buses, including special tour buses that look like old trams.
