Whole Foods Market is a big chain of supermarkets that sells healthy foods. These stores focus on whole foods, which means they don’t use hydrogenated fats, artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Many of the products in Whole Foods are certified organic by the USDA, so customers know they are choosing natural choices.

The company started in Austin, Texas, and has grown to have more than 500 stores in North America and a few in the United Kingdom. In 2017, John Mackey, one of the co-founders, sold Whole Foods to Amazon for $13.7 billion. Since then, Whole Foods has continued to be a popular place for people who want to buy organic and healthy food choices.

History

Early years

In 1978, John Mackey and Renee Lawson used money from their families to open a small natural foods store called SaferWay in Austin, Texas. Two years later, they joined with others to open the original Whole Foods Market, which included meat products. In 1981, a big flood damaged the store, but customers and staff helped fix it, and it reopened soon after.

Expansion

Whole Foods Market grew quickly, first expanding within Texas and then to other places like Houston, Dallas, and New Orleans. By the 1990s, it had bought many other natural food stores across the United States. The company opened its 100th store in 1999 and kept growing. In 2005, it opened a very large store in downtown Austin. In 2008, Whole Foods opened its first store in Hawaii and a special distribution center in Georgia.

In 2017, Amazon bought Whole Foods Market for $13.7 billion, which helped the company grow even more. Whole Foods also planned to open new stores in places that had been empty after other stores closed down.

International expansion

Whole Foods Market entered Canada in 2002 with a store in Toronto and later opened more stores there. In the United Kingdom, it started in 2004 by buying some stores, but faced financial troubles and closed some locations. By 2020, Whole Foods had stores in the United States, Canada, and the UK.

In 2007, Whole Foods Market planned to buy Wild Oats Markets, another natural food store chain. However, the government said this might hurt competition and stop smaller stores from growing. Whole Foods fought this decision, but in 2008, a court said the merger couldn’t happen. Whole Foods then sold the Wild Oats chain.

2017–present: Amazon subsidiary

In 2017, Whole Foods closed some stores because sales were going down. Later that year, Amazon bought Whole Foods Market. In 2022, Whole Foods started letting customers pay by scanning their palms in Austin, Texas. In 2025, workers at a Whole Foods store in Philadelphia voted to form a union to ask for better pay and benefits.

Product quality

Whole Foods Market sells products that meet its own quality standards for being "natural." This means the foods are minimally processed and free from hydrogenated fats, as well as artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. The store also chooses not to sell meat or milk from cloned animals or their offspring, even though it is considered safe to eat by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The company offers many USDA-certified organic foods and aims to be environmentally friendly. Whole Foods does not sell foie gras or eggs from hens kept in small cages, following the advice of animal welfare groups. The Whole Foods website explains the company's rules for selling food, supplements, and personal care products.

Starting in June 2011, personal care products sold at Whole Foods had to follow the same USDA standards for organic food. This meant products labeled "Organic" needed to contain at least 95 percent certified organic ingredients.

In August 2009, the company's leader admitted they had moved away from their focus on natural foods and wanted to return to their roots. Since 2013, many stores have staff called Healthy Eating Specialists who help customers learn about healthy eating and choose good ingredients.

Rating systems

Whole Foods Market created special rating systems to help shoppers make smart choices. For example, in the Seafood area, there is a system to check if wild fish come from sustainable sources, and farm-raised fish must meet certain standards. The Meat area works with a group called the Global Animal Partnership to make sure animals are treated well. In the Produce section, ratings look at how farms work, including the environment and fair treatment of workers. Cleaning products in the grocery area are rated based on how they affect the planet. Whole Foods wants to keep adding more of these helpful rating systems in other areas too.

GMO product labeling

Whole Foods Market planned to add labels showing which foods had GMOs (genetically modified organism) by 2018. They worked on this in many areas. In the grocery section, they looked for items checked by the Non-GMO Project. For fruits and vegetables, they suggested choosing organic or using their "Responsibly Grown" system, which asks farmers to share if they used GMO seeds. In seafood, they planned to start a way to check if farm-raised fish were not from GMOs. Right now, there are no rules from the USDA about organic farmed seafood.

Purchasing

Whole Foods Market buys products from local, regional, and international suppliers for sale in their stores. They negotiate big discounts with major vendors and focus on local products to give each store a special neighborhood feel. Some stores even have a special employee called a "forager" whose job is to find local products for the store.

In April 2007, Whole Foods started the Whole Trade Guarantee. This program focuses on fair treatment and responsibility when buying products from developing countries. It ensures fair prices, good working conditions, and helps support small loans in those countries. The goal was to certify half of their imported products by 2017.

Efforts

Whole Foods Market tries to give back to the community by donating part of its profits to help others. They have special days when customers can help support good causes too.

The company cares about the environment. In 1999, they joined a group that helps protect fish and oceans. They also work to use clean energy and save resources. For example, they have used solar power and tried to reduce plastic bags in stores. They also help farms use better ways to grow food that are better for the planet.

Whole Foods also focuses on treating animals well. They have rules for farmers to follow to make sure animals are cared for properly. However, some groups have disagreed with their choices, especially about certain foods like lobsters and rabbit meat.

Public image and legal issues

Whole Foods Market has often faced criticism from worker groups and has been debated over whether its products are as progressive as advertised. Some believe the company focuses more on expanding organic options than supporting local farmers and smaller producers.

The company has also dealt with many public disagreements and legal matters. For example, in 2009, a leader of the company wrote an opinion piece that many people in the natural foods community found upsetting. The company has also been sued for charging more for products than what was listed on the labels and for having unsafe chemicals in some of its items. There have been many other times when Whole Foods faced criticism for its business choices and how it treats its workers.

Awards and recognition

Whole Foods Market was chosen as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" by Fortune magazine every year from 1998 until 2014, when it was placed at number 44. The company has also earned awards for being socially responsible. In 2006, it was ranked first by Harris Interactive and The Wall Street Journal, and The Grocer named it the "World's Greatest Food Retailer" that same year. It was also listed on the "100 Best Corporate Citizens" list by Corporate Responsibility Officer. In 2014, Supermarket News placed Whole Foods at number 19 on its list of the "Top 75 North American Retailers."

Labor relations and anti-union activism

Whole Foods Market says one of its important values is to support its workers' happiness and success. The company says its way of treating workers makes unions unnecessary. In the United States, after working 800 hours, full-time workers can choose to buy health insurance for as little as $20 every payday just for themselves, with extra cost for covering a spouse or dependents.

The health insurance plan has high amounts that workers must pay before insurance helps, which can be challenging. However, workers also receive money each year for personal wellness. The company's leader spoke about this insurance plan in a newspaper article, sharing his thoughts on health care. Some people disagreed with the company's views and created a page online to encourage others not to shop at Whole Foods.

The company's leader believes that unions can create problems between managers and workers. There have been attempts to form unions at Whole Foods stores, but the company has resisted these efforts. Whole Foods has required workers to attend training sessions about unions. The company has also been involved in disagreements about how farm workers are treated.

In some years, Whole Foods made changes to jobs and health benefits for workers, which led to discussions and disagreements among employees and the company.

Management system

Whole Foods Market has twelve regions, each with its own leaders and teams. Employees are part of four levels: store jobs, facility jobs, regional offices, and the main office.

The company helps employees learn through a mentoring program and an online training portal called "Whole Foods Market University." Employees are called "team leaders" instead of managers, and stores sometimes have fun competitions with prizes.

Employees get discounts on store purchases, starting at 20% and going up to 30% if they choose to take yearly health tests. Whole Foods works with many different companies to provide a variety of products, and each store decides which items to sell.

365 by Whole Foods Market

In 2015, Whole Foods Market introduced a more affordable store concept called "365 By Whole Foods Market" aimed at younger customers. These stores used digital price tags and a smartphone app for information. They focused on reducing waste by donating extra food, using energy-saving lights, and special refrigeration.

The first store opened in Los Angeles in 2016, with more stores opening in places like Atlanta and Georgia. However, after Amazon bought Whole Foods, growth slowed and eventually stopped. In 2019, Whole Foods decided to stop opening new 365 stores, but kept the existing ones open before turning them into regular Whole Foods stores later that year.

Even though the special 365 stores are no longer being built, Whole Foods still uses the "365" name for some of its lower-cost food products sold in its stores and on Amazon.

Whole Foods Market Daily Shop

In March 2024, Whole Foods announced plans to open a new chain of small, quick-shop-format stores in Manhattan later this year. These stores will be much smaller, ranging from 7,000 to 14,000 square feet, and will sell grab-and-go snacks, prepared foods like sandwiches, weekly essentials, seasonal fruits and vegetables, breads, alcohol, meat, seafood, and an in-store Juice & Java section. Juice & Java will offer customers made-to-order drinks, such as coffee, tea, and smoothies, along with soups, sandwiches, and desserts.

These new stores will be located in busy city areas. This isn’t the first time Whole Foods has tried a small store concept. In 2019, they tested a similar idea with a short-lived convenience store in Chelsea, also called "Whole Foods Market Daily Shop".
