Zhengzhou is the capital and largest city of Henan Province in China. With a population of over 12 million people, it is China's 11th largest city. Located in north-central Henan at the edge of the Xiong'er Mountains and beside the Yellow River, Zhengzhou has been an important place for over 4,000 years and is considered part of the cradle of Chinese civilization.
As one of China's nine national central cities, Zhengzhou plays a key role in politics, the economy, and transportation. The city has grown quickly since the 1990s and now has a large economy with many businesses and markets. Zhengzhou is also known for its universities and research centers, and it is home to important sites like two World Heritage Sites and a UNESCO Global Geopark. The city is a major hub for travel and trade in the region.
Etymology
The settlement was first called "Guancheng", meaning "City of the Guan", named after the Guan family who ruled the area as a city-state.
In 583 AD, it became the seat of a prefecture and was renamed "Guanzhou", with "zhou" meaning a prefectural administrative division. The character Zheng (郑) refers to the Zheng state, which once governed the region.
History
Main article: History of Zhengzhou
The city of Zhengzhou has a very long history. It began during the Shang dynasty around 1600 BC, when a settlement called Aodu or Bodu was built there. Archaeologists have found evidence of this ancient city in a walled area in eastern Zhengzhou.
Over time, Zhengzhou grew and changed names. It became an important place during the Sui, Tang, and early Song dynasties, especially because of its role in storing food for nearby cities and armies. In the early 1900s, railways reached Zhengzhou, making it a key transportation hub. The city continued to grow, especially with new factories and universities. Sadly, in July 2021, very heavy floods caused many people to leave their homes.
Geography
Zhengzhou is located just north of the center of Henan Province and south of the Yellow River. It borders Luoyang to the west, Jiaozuo to the northwest, Xinxiang to the northeast, Kaifeng to the east, Xuchang to the southeast, and Pingdingshan to the southwest. The city's land slopes down from west to east and sits where the North China Plain meets the Song Mountains and Xionger Mountains to the west. The city center lies south of the Yellow River, where the valley opens into a wide plain.
The Yellow River runs along the northern edge of Zhengzhou, while the Jialu River, a smaller river, flows through the city. Mountains surround the western parts of the city, while the eastern areas are flat and fertile. Zhengzhou has a humid subtropical climate with cool, dry winters and hot, wet summers. The average temperature is about 15.4 °C (59.7 °F) throughout the year.
Administration and demography
Zhengzhou has 6 urban areas, 5 smaller cities, and 1 county. The city is growing quickly, so these areas may change soon.
In 2020, Zhengzhou had about 12.6 million people living in the whole city area. In the main city part, where 6 districts are located, there were about 10.3 million people. Some nearby places like Xingyang, Xinzheng, and Zhongmu are also becoming more like city areas, making Zhengzhou a big important place in the province.
