The Gentle Amazonian Manatee

The Amazonian manatee is a special and gentle animal that lives in the rivers and lakes of the Amazon Basin. This area includes beautiful countries such as Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. It is the smallest of the three kinds of manatees in the world today.

Amazonian manatees have thin, wrinkled skin that is usually brownish or gray. They have a white patch on their chest and tiny hairs spread across their body. These manatees swim slowly and carefully. They help keep water ecosystems healthy by eating plants and moving through the rivers.

These manatees love to eat water plants like water lilies and water hyacinths, as well as fruits that fall into the water. They can stay underwater for a long time but usually come up for air every five minutes. Amazonian manatees are very special because they are the only manatees that live only in freshwater.

Amazonian manatees have their babies between December and July. After a baby is born, it stays close to its mother for about a year and a half. These manatees can live around 30 years in the wild. They are loved by many people and are important to the rivers they call home.
