What Are Animals?

Animals are living things that can move, eat, and feel. They are different from plants and other tiny creatures. Most animals have special cells that help them move around. They grow from very small balls of cells when they are babies.

Many Kinds of Animals

There are over 1.5 million kinds of animals, and scientists think there are many more we haven’t found yet! Animals come in all sizes. Some are so tiny you need a microscope to see them. Others, like whales, are very big—bigger than many houses!

How Animals Help Us

Animals are very important in our world. They help keep nature balanced. Some animals eat plants, and others eat the animals that eat plants.

We also use animals in many ways. We eat meat, eggs, and drink milk from animals like cows, chickens, and goats. Animals give us materials like wool from sheep and leather from cows. Many people love to have pets, like dogs and cats, that give us company and love.

Fun Facts About Animals

  • The blue whale is the largest animal ever. It can be as long as a school bus!
  • Some tiny animals, like certain bugs, are so small you can’t see them without a magnifying glass.
  • Animals live almost everywhere—from deep oceans to tall mountains and even in your backyard!

Animals make our world interesting and beautiful. They are part of stories, art, and many cultures. Learning about animals helps us understand and care for them better.
