Welcome to British Columbia!

British Columbia is a beautiful place in western Canada. It sits between the wide Pacific Ocean and the tall Rocky Mountains. This land has many different scenes, like rocky coasts, sandy beaches, green forests, sparkling lakes, tall mountains, dry deserts, and grassy plains.

Neighbors and Cities

British Columbia touches Alberta to the east, Yukon and the Northwest Territories to the north, and even reaches down to touch the U.S. states of Washington, Idaho, and Montana to the south. Many people live here—it is Canada’s third-most crowded province! The capital city is Victoria, but the biggest city is Vancouver. Vancouver is part of a big area called Metro Vancouver.

Long History

People have lived in British Columbia for thousands of years. Early groups include the Coast Salish, Tsilhqotʼin, and Haida peoples. In 1871, this area became part of Canada. Today, British Columbia is home to people from many places. English is the main language, but you can also hear Punjabi, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese spoken a lot.

Nature and Fun

British Columbia is full of amazing nature! It has forests, mountains, lakes, and beautiful beaches. The tallest mountain is Mount Fairweather. The province has many parks and protected areas where you can explore. People love to hike, camp, fish, and even go ice sailing in places like Whistler. In the winter, many enjoy skiing and snowboarding in the snowy mountains. The 2010 Winter Olympics were held here in Vancouver and Whistler!

Cities and Life

Life in British Columbia is busy and bright. Vancouver is a big city with tall buildings and many things to do. It is sometimes called “Hollywood North” because many movies are made there. The port of Vancouver is very busy and helps many jobs. Even though only a small part of the land can grow crops, places like the Fraser Valley and Okanagan are important for farming fruits and vegetables.

British Columbia is a wonderful place to live and visit, with its mix of nature, history, and busy cities!
