The CDU and CSU
The CDU/CSU is a special team of two political groups in Germany. They are called the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU). These two groups work very closely together.
The CSU only runs in one part of Germany called Bavaria. The CDU runs in the other fifteen parts. Even though they are two groups, they act like one big team in the German parliament. They have been doing this since 1949!
These two groups often choose the same person to be Chancellor, which is the leader of Germany. Leaders from one group are welcome at meetings of the other group. Both the CDU and CSU are part of bigger teams in Europe, like the European People’s Party.
A Little History
The CDU and CSU started after World War II. They believe in ideas like Christian democracy and conservatism. People often call them one of the main centre-right groups in Germany.
The CSU focuses a lot on Bavaria. Bavaria is mostly a rural area with many people who follow the Catholic religion. The CSU likes to protect Bavaria’s special traditions and customs.
Working Together
Even though they are two groups, the CDU and CSU work very closely. For big votes in Germany’s parliament, they make a plan together and support the same leader for Chancellor. They have special rules to make sure they stay united.
The CDU has members in fifteen of Germany’s sixteen states, while the CSU only has members in Bavaria. But when it’s time for big decisions, they team up and share important jobs in the government.
The CDU and CSU are known for sharing similar ideas, but sometimes they have small differences. The CSU often stands up for family traditions and Bavaria’s special rights. Even with these small differences, they stay strong together as a team.
