What is a College?
A college is a special school where people go to learn after they finish high school. It is a place where students study subjects that help them get ready for jobs or to go to a bigger school called a university.
Colleges can be part of a university, or they can stand alone. Some colleges give students basic lessons before they go to university. Others give out special papers called degrees that show a student has finished their studies.
Where are Colleges Found?
Colleges are found all over the world! In places like France, Belgium, and Switzerland, colleges help students get ready for more advanced school learning. In the United States, colleges might be part of a university or they might be their own schools. Some U.S. colleges are called community colleges, and they help students learn useful skills.
Different Kinds of Colleges
Sometimes, the word “college” can mean different things. In some countries, it can even refer to a high school! For example, in France, some high schools are called colleges. In the United Kingdom, there are colleges for students who are a little older, usually aged 16 to 19, helping them get ready for big exams.
Fun Fact
The word “college” comes from a Latin word that means “to collect.” Long ago, it described a group of people who worked together, like teachers or leaders. Over time, it came to mean a place where students learn!
