How Our Nerves Grow
Inside every animal, including humans, there is a special system that helps us feel, move, and think. This is called the nervous system. It starts growing very early, even before we are born!
When we are just a tiny seed of life, a special tube starts to form. This tube becomes our brain and spinal cord. It is made from the outer layer of cells. After the tube forms, tiny cells called neurons are born. These neurons move to their places and connect with each other, making pathways that help our body work.
Scientists love to study how this happens. They use special tools to see inside cells. This helps them learn how our brains grow healthy.
The nervous system in animals with backbones, called vertebrates, follows the same basic steps. A flat piece of cells called the neural plate folds into a tube. This tube then splits into parts that become the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain. These parts grow and change, making all the special areas of our brain.
As the brain grows, neurons move to where they are needed. Some travel using special guide cells. Others move sideways to find their spots. This helps make sure everything connects just right.
Even after we are born, our brains can still change and grow. New neurons can form in special places, helping us learn and remember new things.
The development of our nervous system is one of nature’s most amazing processes!
