What Is Electric Power?

Electric power is how fast electricity moves in a wire or a circuit. Think of it like a river flowing. The faster the river flows, the more water it carries. In the same way, electric power tells us how much electricity is being used at any moment.

We measure electric power in watts. A watt is a tiny unit, so we often talk about kilowatts (which are 1,000 watts), megawatts (1,000,000 watts) and gigawatts (1,000,000,000 watts).

Electricity comes from big places called power stations. These stations use many sources to make electricity, like water, wind, and the sun. The electricity then travels through wires β€” just like the picture of towers carrying power β€” to our homes, schools, and factories.

Why Is Electric Power Important?

Electric power is very important because it helps us do many things every day. It gives us light when it’s dark. It makes machines work in factories and helps trains move. It keeps our food cold and our rooms warm. Without electric power, many of the things we use would not work.

Electricity can do many jobs. It can make things move, give us light, or create heat. It is very good at all these jobs and can travel very far through wires.
