An Ancient Bird Relative

Elornis was an ancient bird that lived a very long time ago during a time called the Late Oligocene. This bird was found in a place named Ronzon in France. It is thought to be related to modern flamingo birds.

Named by Scientists

Scientists first gave the name Elornis to this bird in the 1850s. A French scientist named Henri Milne-Edwards helped describe it later. Even though another scientist named Auguste Aymard was the first to use the name, it was Milne-Edwards who gave better descriptions and pictures.

A Flamingo Relative

For many years, Elornis was thought to be a true flamingo, part of the group called Phoenicopteridae. Newer studies suggest it might have been an earlier relative of flamingos. Scientists find it hard to learn more about Elornis because the fossils cannot be found today. They only have the original descriptions and pictures made by Milne-Edwards.
