What are emoji?
Emoji are small pictures that people use in text messages and on websites. They help show feelings or ideas that might be hard to explain with just words. For example, a smiling face can show happiness, or a heart can show love. Emoji make messages more fun and easier to understand.
Where did emoji come from?
The first emoji were created in Japan in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The word "emoji" comes from the Japanese words for "picture" and "character." Even though it sounds like "emotion," that is just a coincidence.
Emoji became very popular around the world in the 2010s when groups like Unicode started including them in computer systems. Today, emoji are used everywhere, from the West to many other places.
Why are emoji important?
In 2015, the FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY emoji was chosen as the word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries. This shows how important these little pictures have become in our everyday lives.
