The Greater Caucasus

The Greater Caucasus is a big, beautiful mountain range in the world. It is part of the big Caucasus Mountains. These mountains run for about 1,200 kilometres (750 miles) from west to east.

It starts from the Taman Peninsula by the Black Sea and goes all the way to the Absheron Peninsula by the Caspian Sea. This means it begins near the Western Caucasus close to Sochi and reaches almost to Baku.

The Greater Caucasus has many tall peaks. The highest is Mount Elbrus, which is the tallest mountain in Europe. Other tall peaks include Dykh-Tau, Shkhara, and Kazbek. These mountains are very special and attract many visitors who love nature and adventure.

The mountains also help decide the border between Eastern Europe and Western Asia. The area north of the mountains is called Ciscaucasia, and the area south is Transcaucasia. Many roads and paths go through these mountains, making it an important place for travel.
