Welcome to Guatemala!

Guatemala is a beautiful country in Central America. It is next to Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the northeast, Honduras to the east, and El Salvador to the southeast. It has the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Gulf of Honduras to the northeast.

Rich History

Long ago, the land of Guatemala was home to the Maya civilization. The Maya built amazing cities with big pyramids and temples. Later, the Spanish came and made Guatemala part of their empire. Today, many people still celebrate old Maya traditions.

Nature and Wildlife

Guatemala has many different kinds of plants and animals. It is a biodiversity hotspot, meaning many species live there that are found nowhere else. You can see forests, mountains, and even deserts! One famous place is Tikal, a big Maya ruin in a forest.

Cities and Places to Visit

The capital of Guatemala is Guatemala City. It is a big city with many people. Another cool place is Antigua Guatemala, an old city with beautiful buildings. It looks like a place from a long time ago!

People and Culture

Guatemala has many different groups of people. Most people are Ladino, which means they have a mix of Maya and European roots. There are also many indigenous Maya people. They speak many languages, including Spanish and different Maya languages.

People in Guatemala love music, dancing, and good food. The marimba, a wooden xylophone, is the national instrument. Traditional food includes dishes made from maize, chilies, and black beans. One popular dish is Kak'ik, a tomato-based stew with turkey.
