Welcome to Hawaii!
Hawaii is a beautiful group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is a special place in the United States because it is made up of many islands, not just one landmass. Hawaii is very far from the rest of the United States, about 2,000 miles southwest of the U.S. mainland. It is one of two states that are not connected to the rest of the country, the other being Alaska.
Hawaii has eight main islands: Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi (often called the "Big Island"). Most people live on Oʻahu, where the capital city, Honolulu, is located. The islands are home to many volcanoes, some of which are still active today!
The people of Hawaii have a rich history. Long ago, people from Polynesians settled on the islands. They created a kingdom and later became part of the United States in 1959. Hawaii is famous for its sunny beaches, green volcanoes, and warm, tropical weather that draws many visitors every year.
Life in Hawaii is unique. The culture comes from the early Polynesians and mixes with many other cultures over time. Traditional dances like the hula and fun parties called lūʻau are still enjoyed today. The food is also special, with dishes like poi made from taro and tasty mixes of many cuisines.
Hawaii’s natural beauty is a big draw. The islands have amazing beaches, towering mountains, and many plants and animals that live only there. Two special places, Haleakalā National Park on Maui and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, protect these wonderful sights. Visitors can see active volcanoes, hike through forests, and enjoy the sunny shores.
Even though Hawaii is a popular spot, it faces some challenges. Changes in the weather patterns can bring difficulties like dry spells and rising sea levels. People in Hawaii work together to care for their beautiful home and welcome visitors while keeping their traditions alive.
