Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina was a very big storm that happened in August 2005. It started as a small storm in the ocean and grew bigger as it moved over warm water. The storm hit the southern part of the United States, especially the city of New Orleans.

People knew the storm was coming, and many were told to leave their homes. Some people stayed, and when the storm hit, water came into parts of the city because walls built to keep water out failed. Helpers like the United States Coast Guard worked hard to find and help people after the storm.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the most expensive storms ever. It made a big change in how people prepare for big storms. The name "Katrina" is not used again for storms because of how strong it was.

Katrina started as a tiny storm called a tropical wave on August 19, 2005. It grew into a bigger storm and became a hurricane before hitting land near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana on August 29.

Many people worked together to help fix things after the storm. Cities like Houston in Texas welcomed people who had to leave their homes. It took a long time to rebuild and make things safe again.
