Integer programming is a fun type of math puzzle! In these puzzles, we try to find the best way to count things, but we can only use whole numbers — like 1, 2, or 3 — not fractions like half an apple.
One common kind is called integer linear programming. This is when we use straight-line rules to help us find the best whole-number answers. People use this math in real life, like when they figure out the best way to pack things into boxes or decide how many toys to make in a factory.
Integer programming can be tricky, especially when the answers must be either zero or one — like yes or no choices. This makes it one of the harder puzzles in computer science. Even though it can be tough, it helps solve many real-world problems. For example, it can help farms plan their crops, schedule buses and trains, and even design phone networks — all by using whole numbers!
