Isabella I of Castile
Isabella I, also called Isabella the Catholic, was the Queen of Castile and León from 1474 until she passed away in 1504. She was also the Queen of Aragon as the wife of King Ferdinand II. Together, they are known as the Catholic Monarchs and ruled a unified Spain.
Isabella was born in Madrigal de las Altas Torres on April 22, 1451. Her parents were King John II of Castile and Isabella of Portugal. She grew up in a time when her family faced many challenges, but she remained strong and wise.
In 1469, Isabella married her cousin Ferdinand. This marriage helped bring the kingdoms of Spain together. With Ferdinand’s help, Isabella became Queen of Castile. She worked hard to improve her kingdom by fixing debts and helping people live better lives.
Isabella and Ferdinand supported explorers, like Christopher Columbus. In 1492, Columbus’s voyage led to the discovery of the New World. This made Spain very powerful and began what is called the Spanish Golden Age.
Isabella was known for being wise and fair. She wanted to do what was right, even when it was hard. She is remembered for helping unite Spain and supporting big discoveries that changed the world.
