Captain James Cook

Captain James Cook was a famous explorer from England. He sailed across big oceans to discover new places. Cook led three big trips across the Pacific and Southern Oceans between 1768 and 1779. He was the first European to map the main islands of New Zealand and visit the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands.

Cook started sailing when he was young. He worked on ships that carried coal along the coast of England. Later, he joined the Royal Navy. He learned to make very good maps of places like the entrance to the St. Lawrence River and the coast of Newfoundland.

On his first big trip, Cook sailed to the southern Pacific Ocean. He visited Tahiti to watch a star called Venus pass in front of the Sun. He also went around all of New Zealand's main islands and drew maps of almost the whole coast. After that, he sailed to the east coast of Australia and saw it for the first time.

Cook's trips helped people learn about many new places. He made maps of coastlines, islands, and other spots. He met many local people and shared his discoveries with others. Cook was very good at sailing and solving problems, like keeping his crew healthy on long trips.

Cook is remembered as one of the greatest explorers. Many places and schools are named after him. People still talk about his adventures and the new lands he found.
