The Kushan Empire

The Kushan Empire was a big, old empire that started around 30 CE. It was made by a group of people called the Yuezhi. They lived in places that are now Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

The Kushans were kind to many religions. They liked Hinduism and Buddhism. Because of them, Buddhism could travel to far places like China and parts of Central Asia. They brought peace for about 200 years. This peaceful time was called the "Pax Kushana".

The Kushan Empire was also a busy trading place. It connected the big Roman Empire with China. This helped many different cultures share goods and ideas.

A Mix of Cultures

The Kushans mixed many cultures together. They used writing from the Greeks but changed it for their own language. Their coins had Greek designs and words. They built many forts and temples. Some of their art shows people with special head shapes, which was common in Central Asia.

Helping Buddhism Grow

The Kushans helped Buddhism grow a lot. They built monasteries and helped Buddhist books travel. One famous Kushan ruler, Kanishka the Great, helped make many Buddhist statues. He also called a big meeting of Buddhist leaders in Kashmir.
