Landlocked Countries

A landlocked country is a country that does not touch the ocean. There are 44 landlocked countries in the world. Some of these countries are surrounded by other landlocked nations. For example, Liechtenstein and Uzbekistan are called "doubly landlocked."

Interesting Facts

Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country. Kyrgyzstan is the farthest from any ocean. Ethiopia has the most people living in it among landlocked countries.

Why It Matters

Being landlocked can make things harder for a country. Nations often want access to water for trade and other reasons. The United Nations works to help landlocked countries.

Landlocked Countries by Continent

Africa has the most landlocked countries. Europe comes next, followed by Asia. South America also has some landlocked countries. Places like Australia, North America, Antarctica, and Oceania do not have any landlocked countries.

Landlocked countries are mostly found on the big land areas of Afro-Eurasia. Two exceptions are Bolivia and Paraguay in South America.
