What is a Lithium-ion Battery?

A lithium-ion battery, or Li-ion battery, is a special kind of rechargeable battery. It stores energy by moving tiny particles called lithium ions between two materials. These batteries are very powerful for their size and can be recharged many times. They have been used since 1991 and keep getting better.

Where Do We Use Them?

Lithium-ion batteries have changed our world! They power many things we use every day, like consumer electronics, laptop computers, cellular phones, and electric cars. They are also used to store energy for homes and special machines.

How Do They Work?

These batteries were developed by scientists who won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Inside a lithium-ion battery, there are two electrodes—one positive and one negative—separated by a special material. When you use a device, the lithium ions move from one electrode to the other, creating energy. When you charge the battery, the ions move back.

Fun Facts

  • Lithium-ion batteries can be very small, like in a watch, or very big, like in a car!
  • They can hold a lot of energy in a small space, which is why they are used in so many devices.
  • Scientists are always working to make these batteries safer and better for the environment.

Lithium-ion batteries make our modern life easier by powering the devices we rely on every day!
