The Happy Run: London Marathon

The London Marathon is a big, fun race that happens every year in London, England. People run, walk, or roll (in wheelchairs) along a pretty path next to the River Thames. It’s a special day full of cheers and smiles!

Why We Love It

The London Marathon started in 1981 because two kind men, Chris Brasher and John Disley, wanted everyone to enjoy running together. Now, thousands of people join in — from fast runners to folks who just want to have fun. There are races for everyone: grown-ups, kids, and even people using wheelchairs!

Fun Facts

  • The race begins in Blackheath and ends at The Mall, near famous places like Big Ben and Buckingham Palace.
  • Many runners wear silly costumes to make everyone laugh and cheer!
  • The marathon helps raise money for important causes. Since it began, it has helped collect over £1 billion!
  • In 2026, there will be a new 5km run called “Friday Night Lights” at Battersea Park.

For Young Runners

Kids can join the Mini Marathon! It’s a short, 3-mile race for children under 17. They run the same path as the big runners, just a little bit of it. It’s a great way to feel like a real marathon hero!

The London Marathon is a day when everyone feels welcome, and it shows how fun and friendly running can be!
