The Monarchy of Norway
The monarchy of Norway is a special way that Norway has for having a leader. The leader is called the king, and he is the head of state. Right now, the king is King Harald V. He has been the king since 1991. The king’s son, Crown Prince Haakon, might be the next king one day.
The king does not make all the big decisions for the country. Instead, he helps in special ways. He meets leaders from other countries, signs laws to make them official, and visits important places. The king is also a symbol that helps everyone in Norway feel together.
Norway has had kings for a very long time, since the year 872. The first king was Harald Fairhair, who brought many small parts of Norway together. Today, the king lives in a big palace in Oslo, called the Royal Palace. The king and his family also have other homes in different places in Norway.
The king is part of the Church of Norway and is the top leader of the country’s military, but real control of the military is with the government. The king’s job is to help and support Norway in many kind and special ways.
