A Tall Mountain with Snow
Mount Shasta is a very tall mountain in Siskiyou County, California. It is part of the Cascade Range and touches the sky at 14,179 feet (4,322 meters). This makes it one of the tallest mountains in California.
People call Mount Shasta a stratovolcano. This means it is a big, cone-shaped mountain made from old lava flows. Scientists think it might erupt again one day, but it has been quiet for a long time.
The land around Mount Shasta is part of the Shasta–Trinity National Forest. Many people visit here to hike, take pictures, and enjoy the snowy peaks. The mountain has several glaciers, with the Whitney Glacier being the longest.
Interesting Stories and Names
Different cultures have special names for Mount Shasta. In the Shasta language, it is called Waka-nunee-Tuki-wuki, and in the Karuk language, it is known as Úytaahkoo.
Many stories and legends are told about Mount Shasta. Some people believe a hidden city lives inside the mountain. These stories have inspired books, movies, and paintings.
The mountain became well-known to many when famous climbers like John Muir reached the top. Today, Mount Shasta is a special place for many people to explore and dream about.
