Olympia, Greece

Olympia is a small, special town in Greece. It is found in a place called Elis on the Peloponnese peninsula. This town is very important because it is where the ancient Olympic Games used to happen every four years, a long time ago.

The games were held in a big, sacred area called the Altis. This place was mostly for the god Zeus. There is a big stadium there too, and it was where athletes from all over ancient Greece came to compete. Even today, you can still see the old stadium and many other ruins of buildings.

People can visit Olympia and see many old stones and pieces of history. There are ruins of more than 760 buildings, including temples and statues. One special spot is the tomb of Pelops, a hero from old stories. Museums in the town show beautiful things made a long time ago.

Olympia is also where the Olympic flame for today’s Olympic Games is lit. It is lit in front of the Temple of Hera using sunlight, just like in the very old games. This makes Olympia a very important place for sports all over the world.
