Pashto

Pashto is a special language spoken by many people in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan, along with Dari. Many Pashtuns speak Pashto as their first language.

Pashto is very important to the Pashtun people. It helps show their identity and culture. People speak Pashto not just in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also in other parts of the world where Pashtuns live.

Pashto is spoken mainly in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. In Afghanistan, it is one of the two official languages. In Pakistan, many people speak Pashto in the northwestern area called Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Smaller groups of Pashto speakers live in places like Punjab province, Islamabad, and big cities such as Karachi.

Pashto belongs to the Eastern Iranian group of languages and is part of the big Indo-European language family. It has two main groups of dialects: the "soft" southern dialects and the "hard" northern dialects.

Pashto uses a special alphabet called the Pashto alphabet. This alphabet is a version of the Perso-Arabic alphabet and was helped by a person named Bayazid Pir Roshan in the 16th century.

Pashto has many colorful words for greeting others and describing the world around us. For example, the word for "red" is سور/ سره sur/sra, and the word for "green" is šin / šna.

Pashto also has special words for different times of the day, like ګهيځ gahíź for "morning" and ماښام māx̌ā́m for "evening."

People who speak Pashto have a long tradition of sharing stories, proverbs, and poems by speaking them out loud. Written Pashto literature grew in the 1600s, thanks to famous poets like Khushal Khan Khattak and Rahman Baba.
